We’re all adults here, we know that at the end of the day; online marketing is about growing your business reach. We can dress it up as ‘engaging with your customer’ and ‘being transparent’ - and those sentiments are absolutely true but they’re not the end goal, if we’re going to be honest about it. The end goal is about improving your business, whether it be functionality, customer service or profit (let’s hope it’s all of those!) Why else would businesses invest in online marketing if it’s not to further their business prospects?
That said, it can be all too easy to forget that online marketing should be a two way relationship. It’s ok to send emails about your special offers, your news, your views but it’s also imperative to break out of that sometimes with some humour. Name some of the most successful online campaigns. You can bet that at least some of them, if not all, contained humour. We need and yearn for some fun in our daily working grind. This isn’t the 50s – souless advertising is just propaganda that intelligent people see right through. Business communications have evolved. Think back over the meetings and conferences you’ve attended over the years...which did you enjoy the most? The humdrum speaker that lacked humour and innovation, or the facilitator who shared invaluable knowledge, encouraged participation and had a comic kick in their stride?
It’s Funny. Humour only becomes more important as time goes on – with more and more messages out there trying to capture your attention, go for humour. Humour captivates, humour joins us together, humour is VIRAL!
So why not take advantage of the upcoming season and send a Halloween email campaign that revives your email strategy and audience participation? Don’t try to sell anything – just offer something of value. It might be a Halloween game or a silly video. The key is to warm the cockles of your audience’s hearts so that they warm to your business and come back for more!
